The Future of the Abortion Debate

Noam Scheiber has a fascinating analysis in the New Republic of how the Terri Schiavo case exposed a rift within the Democratic Party between what she calls "Communitarians" and Social Libertarians.

He also suggests if the "communitarians" prevail, it could be a roadmap to a return to a Democratic Majority.

Unlike Marions (I'm a guy), Noams are pretty much always males. Including this one, Amy Sullivan's boyfriend. So it should be "He says."

I think he's full of it. Somehow, coming from the Gores the communitarian / social libertarian thing has a little cred - they've been around the block, Tipper's learned from her years as a RW dupe, and Al is a committed civil libertarian - but coming from the New Republican, you just know there's a "take a dive" agenda. And, sure enough. What a freaking troll/mole he is. Yeah, that's it. Side with the Schiavo interveners, now that we know that's a losing position. Not to mention that what happened is what Terri wanted, what her husband wanted, and, given that He didn't heal her at the last hour, what God wanted, too. Let's steamroll the Omnipotent nanny state over that "dignity" and "rights" blather that soccer moms can't begin to understand, the poor little waggy-heads.
